No One Does It Alone

A First Time for Everything

I completed my first virtual keynote during the 34th Annual Family Focused Treatment Association Conference. It was also the first time I debuted my talk ‘The Difference.’ When I travel the country, people ask me “What made a difference in your life?” I tell them it isn’t one thing but rather a series of positive experiences. Namely, being surrounded people who accept and validate you.

One FFTA conference attendee emailed me saying I had affirmed what she did as a foster parent. This truly touched my heart as I wasn’t expecting her message. She mentioned how she believed every foster child is capable of reaching his or her potential. I too agree. In a system that can seem overwhelming, there is hope. I look at myself and other thriving foster alumni who are prime examples. Many of us had someone - a foster parent, caring relative, social worker or teacher who believed in us. I believe this lays the groundwork to help children and families in our communities.
