Living in the Moment
No Time Like the Present
This past weekend was a first for me — I dressed up three times for Halloween. In the past, I would usually wear one costume or just my regular clothes. This year I hosted a virtual Halloween party, volunteered at a community event, and cooked a festive dinner. Initially I was nervous about pulling this off. But being who I am, I knew I would be fine.
And I was! For the Halloween party, I dressed up as a cheetah. At the South Seattle Emerald “T’Challaween 2021” — a Marvel Avengers-themed tribute to our South Seattle heroes and role models — I dressed up as an “Agent of Shield.” For dinner, I was a witch. As I put on each costume, I found myself having fun. These last three months have been the busiest of my life. Dressing up gave me the chance to relax and really be in the moment with others. For once, I didn’t think about my next meeting or the pandemic.
Browsing through social media and seeing all my friends dressed up put a smile on my face. I relished in the fact we were all able to have some normalcy even if it was just for a few moments. It made me happy to see my fellow neighbors and friends who I hadn’t seen in months. It reminded me how important it is to slow down and be present. I always joke with my friends that if something isn’t written down, it’s not getting done. I now realize that everything that needs to be done shouldn’t be written down. Instead it should be experienced with joy and spontaneity.
I hope you all had a safe and relaxing Halloween. Until next time…
